“Alabama legislature passes redistricting maps that Democrats say defy court order”

WaPo: “The Republican-led House and Senate in Alabama approved dueling congressional maps Wednesday that would increase the percentage of Black voters in the state’s 2nd District — but not by enough, Democrats argued, to comply with a federal court order to create two districts in the state with at least close to a majority-Black population.”

538’s analysis concludes, “it seems very possible that [the three-judge court that struck down the previous plan] will reject [the Senate committee’s] map too and appoint a special master to draw a new map — one that would probably give Black voters and Democrats that extra seat that everyone expected after the Supreme Court’s ruling. But Alabama Republicans seem determined not to go down without a fight.”
