NY Times summary of Pence’s 1/6/21

From morning prayer to pre-dawn Bible verse, and all the drama in between. (Separately, I’ve heard and seen several commentaries, besides my own, asking for more inquiry into Pence’s conduct prior to January 6 itself. Today’s hearing seemed to want to portray Pence solely as unqualified hero for his correct conduct on January 6, without probing whether Pence bore some responsibility for the circumstances of January 6 itself. One point made in post-hearing discussions was that Pence apparently instinctively understood in early December that he had no authority to repudiate the Electoral Count vote, even before the Electoral College met. This fact adds to the wonderment why Pence waited until January 6 itself to announce that he would not be doing what Trump wanted–and doesn’t address why Pence in mid-December did not congratulate Biden and Harris on their Electoral College victories.)
