“Democrats play with fire in GOP primaries”

I find it morally repugnant as well as politically reckless that Democrats are engaging in this strategy–and apparently doing so systematically rather than in a single isolated instance. If protecting democracy itself from the authoritarian impulses of Trump and his MAGA acolytes is the highest priority,  as Joe Biden as the leader of the Democratic Party repeatedly professes, then Democrats should be doing everything they can to minimize the chances that these anti-democracy candidates ever hold office, including by helping to defeat them in their Republican primaries rather than by attempting to orchestrate primary victories for them in the hope that they would be easier general-election opponents to defeat. It certainly undermines the claim that the work of the January 6 committee is fundamentally important to the preservation of the Constitution (in order to protect against the possibility of a repeated coup attempt in 2024), if Democrats are willing to risk populating Congress with election denialists so as to avoiding running against Republicans who embrace a shared commitment to accepting the verdict of the voters after a free and fair election.

UPDATE: The Washington Post addresses the same issue, including this quote from Howard Wolfson, the Democratic strategist: “I think it’s very dangerous and potentially very risky to elevate people who are hostile to democracy. … Either this is a crisis moment or it isn’t. And if it is — which it is — you don’t play cute in a crisis.”
