Breaking News: McClatchy Posts Email Exchanges Between DiGregorio and von Spakovsky Regarding Moritz, Arizona Voter ID, and More

You can find the documents posted here. I’ve only had a chance to glance at these, but I have a few initial reactions:
1. Was it commonplace for the Republican EAC commissioners to consult privately (without copying the Democratic commissioners) with a DOJ lawyer and with member’s of a Republican Senator’s staff about the positions the EAC would take? It appears that EAC executive director Tom Wilkey was included on the email.
2. Why was Doug Lewis of the Election Center copied on von Spakovsky’s complaint about the alleged bias of Moritz researchers? UPDATE: The Michigan Director of Elections, Christopher Thomas, was also copied on that message, as was Tony J. Sirvello, III, Executive Director, International Association Of Clerks, Recorders, Election Officials and Treasurers
3. If this was a 2-2 bipartisan commission, how were these deals over Arizona’s voter id law and interpretation of the HAVA box check controversy resolved with the agreement of the Democratic commissioners?
I don’t know who leaked these documents to the EAC, but they certainly make former Commissioner DiGregorio look very good in standing up to von Spakovsky. This is not the picture I had of Commissioner DiGregorio’s role at the EAC from others. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about this.
