“Supreme Court fight could define redistricting session”

News from Va:

State lawmakers return to Richmond on Monday for a special session on congressional redistricting that might end up being defined by an equally partisan battle over who should sit on the state’s highest court.

Federal judges have given Virginia until Sept. 1 to submit a plan to redefine congressional boundaries after ruling that the current map, drawn by Republicans and adopted in 2012, illegally packs too many African-American voters into the 3rd U.S. House District, diluting their influence elsewhere.

Republicans who control the House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate also plan to use the session to vote in their choice for the Supreme Court of Virginia, Court of Appeals Judge Rossie D. Alston Jr.
