Two on Ethics Reform

Today’s Roll Call features two commentaries ($) on Congressional ethics reform. Norm Ornstein writes “The train wreck is ahead, and when it arrives, it will be a huge story. Indictments will suggest that the culture of corruption was very real indeed — and it will shine a bright spotlight on what the new Congress, elected by voters who clearly and directly reacted against that culture of corruption, has done to deal with it. ” Dennis Thompson writes: “Thirty-four states now have ethics commissions with jurisdiction over legislators. By most accounts, these commissions work well, serving the interests of the legislature as well as the citizens of the state. Most state legislators have recognized that they do not deserve to have the confidence of public unless they take steps to avoid the conflict of interest inherent in self-regulation. Why should we expect less of Congress?”
