Cal. Supremes Hold Tribes Bound by Disclosure Rules

In a 4-3 opinion, the California Supreme Court held that Indian tribes are bound by campaign finance disclosure rules (Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians v. Superior Court). The AP has this report. The tribes had argued that, as sovereign governments, they can’t be subject to actions by the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) to enforce disclosure rules. (Disclosure: I was on the Board of California Common Cause, an amicus in support of the FPPC, at the time it became involved in this matter.)
