“Counting the Votes, Badly”

The NY Times offers this lead editorial. There is much in here with which I agree, but I must take issue with one aspect of the last paragraph: “Election reform has tended to be a partisan issue, with Democrats arguing for reform and Republicans resisting it. It shouldn’t be. Congressional Democrats should make fixing this country’s broken system of elections a top priority, and Republicans should join them.”
I don’t think it is fair to say that Republicans have been resisting reform. Republicans have been more concerned about fraud, and have enacted laws they say will prevent fraud, such as voter identification laws. Republicans, most notably Maryland’s Republican governor Erlich, has also raised questions about the security and reliability of electronic voting machines. The Democrats and Republicans have some different ideas about what reform should look like, which is why I’ve proposed some reforms aimed at finding common ground, such as my proposal for coupling voter identification (through fingerprints) with universal voter registration conducted by the government.
