A snippet: “Both Sessions and Shelby had expressed reservations about the legislation, especially the way it continues to place Alabama and other Southern states under close Justice Department supervision. Arguably, Alabama, one of the most politically integrated states in the nation, has come a long way since the Civil Rights Era, and a case can be made that there are other states where abuses merit scrutiny. However, there are still politicians and others in this state who would be inclined to play free and loose with voting regulations if they thought the Justice Department would look the other way.”
