Roll call offers this report (paid subscription required), which begins: ” After striking a deal with Republican lawmakers who had threatened to sideline the reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act, House leaders announced Friday that the measure will go to the chamber’s floor this week. Although Republican leaders and Democratic proponents of the bill had hoped to place the measure on the chamber’s suspension calendar–a mechanism used to consider noncontroversial bills that does not allow for amendments–objections from Georgia and Texas lawmakers halted those plans. Instead, under a tentative agreement reached with leaders last week, lawmakers will be permitted to offer a limited number of amendments to the legislation and will be allowed a lengthier period for debate.”
