Before voting 73-25 to limit debate on the immigration bill this morning, the Senate narrowly rejected a motion to table the McConnell Amendment, which would require voters to show government-issued photo ID in order to vote in federal elections effective 2008. The Orange County Register has this story, and my views on the McConnell Amendment are here. A final vote on the legislation is expected Thursday afternoon. While the voter ID issue has been almost entirely buried amid the vigorous debate over immigration reform, I suspect that addition of this amendment would cause at least some Democrats to vote against the bill.
