Lobbying Reform/527 Legislation Update

The Hill offers Republicans vow to pass limits on 527s, which begins: “House Republicans yesterday sent a message to Democrats insistent on keeping restrictions on 527 groups out of the chamber’s lobbying reform bill. Five GOP members, led by Chief Deputy Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.), declared they would use every opportunity to seek a crackdown on the 527s’ potent political power.”
The Washington Post offers Senate Votes Down Outside Ethics Office, which begins: “The Senate rejected a proposal to establish an independent office to investigate ethics complaints against its members, and then cleared the way to pass a broad-based ethics and lobbying bill this week.”
The Los Angeles Times offers Senators End Right to Derail Votes Secretly, which begins: “The Senate on Tuesday voted to strip its members of the power to secretly place a ‘hold’ on legislation they oppose, a parliamentary tool that has allowed a single senator to derail bills or nominations while leaving no fingerprints. The proposal’s passage came as the Senate drew close to finishing debate on a bill that would overhaul the chamber’s lobbying and ethics rules.”
Roll Call offers Lobby Vote Teed Up for Today (paid subscription required), which begins: “Senators will vote on final passage of a lobbying reform package today, after moving last night to drop two key provisions by cutting off debate on the matter. To quickly wrap up work on the issue, Senators agreed to forgo votes on one provision that would crack down on lawmakers’ use of corporate jets and another that would severely curtail the practice of earmarks.”
