After a social media post circulated on election day claiming county residents can vote in Municipal Elections, the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office made a Facebook post reminding voters this isn’t true.
Allegedly, the initial social media post encouraged residents of Harrison County, who don’t live in Gulfport city limits, to vote. Tuesday evening, there were reports of long lines at the Lyman Ward 7 voting precinct, where around 250 county residents waited to file affidavit ballots.
The Secretary of State’s statement was posted Tuesday at 6 p.m., and reads as follows:
The Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office is aware of a post on social media purporting that voters outside of the city limits of Gulfport can vote in the municipal election. While any person who shows up to vote is given the opportunity to cast an affidavit ballot, any person who resides outside of the city limits will have that affidavit ballot rejected and not counted.
