“Celebrating Voting in Australia”

Tapen Sinha:

Voting means (swimming) costume party

It has become a tradition – especially in surfing communities – to vote in their swimwear. Here is a young lady voting in “Surfers Paradise”. Yes, that is the name of the place on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

It is not just the women who go voting in their swimwear. Men do it too. Here is one guy voting in the Bondi Beach precinct of Sydney.

Part of the reason why people are showing up like that was because the maker of “Budgie Smuggler” was giving out free swimming trunks who voted donning their swimming costumes. Nothing in the constitution says anything about a dress code for voting.
