It contains this interesting tidbit: “[U.S. Chamber of Commerce executive Bruce] Josten was joined at the briefing by attorney Eugene Scalia of the firm Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, who offered a detailed critique of the provisions of the DISCLOSE Act. Scalia said the bill’s provisions requiring groups paying for political ads to disclose their donors were designed to chill free speech. He suggested that such disclosure would dampen the willingness of companies to participate in political discussions by contributing to groups that sponsor political messages….Scalia is the son of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.”
UPDATE: Roll Call‘s report on this (no pay wall this week!) confirms what I’ve been saying: it is hard to see a path for the passage of this bill in its present form in the Senate.
