“Texas Republicans want power to overturn Harris County elections over mishaps at the polls”

The Houston Chronicle reports on the 6th of 7 bills targeting Harris County to pass the Texas Senate.  This one allows the appointed secretary of state to order a new election in a county with more than 2.7 million people if at least 2% of the polling places in that county run out of usable ballots during voting hours and don’t quickly get supplemental ballots.  Harris County is, of course, the only Texas county at that threshold.

I’m all for preparing for contingencies that protect the right to vote in the event of serious unanticipated problems.  But there are a lot of thorny issues involved in rerunning just one county in an election spanning more than that one county.  And I can’t think of a legitimate reason why only one county would need a contingency.
