If Pennsylvania used Alaska’s electoral system…

ELB readers know that throughout this year I’ve urged us all to process election-related news with this question in mind: what if the relevant state used Alaska’s new electoral system? (Obviously, this question doesn’t apply to Alaska itself.) Tonight’s debate between Fetterman and Oz in Pennsylvania’s US Senate election is another useful reminder of the ongoing relevance of this question. If Pennsylvania used Alaska’s “top 4” system, the current election would involve four candidates: David McCormick and Conor Lamb, in addition to Fetterman and Oz. With Alaska’s system, voters would have the opportunity to rank their preferences among these four alternatives. I can imagine that many Pennsylvania voters right now might be wishing that they would have the opportunity to express their relative preferences among these four candidates, rather than just having to choose between Fetterman and Oz.
