Washington & Lee Law Search for Assistant Professor of Law Specializing in Election Law and Voting Rights

This looks like a great opportunity for a junior person:

Washington and Lee University (W&L) School of Law invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Law focusing on election law and voting rights.  This faculty appointment will be affiliated with W&L’s new DeLaney Center, an interdisciplinary academic center for teaching and research on Southern race relations, culture, and politics that will consist of six affiliated faculty members, a director, a faculty fellow, a post-doctoral fellow, and a post-baccalaureate fellow.  We encourage and welcome applicants with a research agenda focusing on these and related areas, including but not limited to: constitutional and statutory law protecting the right to vote and participation in the political process; the history of discrimination in voting; political theories regarding democratic representation and engagement; the composition, structure, and competition of political parties and systems; and the administration and security of elections.

The successful candidate will regularly teach a course or seminar on election law and voting rights at the Law School that is cross-listed for undergraduate enrollment as part of W&L’s interdisciplinary Law, Justice, and Society program.  The successful candidate also will teach related courses at the Law School, such as Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Civil Procedure, Civil Rights Seminar, and/or American Legal History.  In addition, the successful candidate may engage in interdisciplinary collaboration through the DeLaney Center and W&L’s numerous other departments and institutions.

In addition to our subject-matter focus, we look for colleagues who will embrace and meaningfully contribute to our close-knit, collegial, and intellectually vibrant community.  We are excited to advance our trajectory of outstanding scholarship and teaching with this new hire.  A central aspect of the Law School’s mission is to promote a diverse, equitable, and collaborative intellectual community.  Our mission statement is here. We continually strive to foster an inclusive campus community that recognizes the value of all persons regardless of identity.  To further our mission, we are committed to enhancing the diversity of our faculty and student body.  In that regard, we especially welcome candidates from members of communities that are traditionally under-represented in the legal profession and academia.

Qualifications

A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school or equivalent degree is expected.  We particularly encourage applications from entry-level and junior lateral candidates with 1-2 years in a tenure-track position.  We also will consider exceptional candidates with a Ph.D. in a closely-related field (such as history or political science) who have a demonstrated interest in teaching and research in election law and voting rights.  In all cases, we seek candidates with scholarly distinction or promise as well as a commitment to excellence in teaching.
