“Will Wisconsin’s Republicans Make Voting Meaningless, or Just Difficult?”

This New Yorker article depicts the violent threats that Wisconsin municipal clerks and election officials have faced since the 2020 presidential election.  Their harassment is symptomatic of a broadening battle over the State’s election administration.  Currently, sixty percent of Wisconsin Republicans believe the 2020 election was stolen.  Abolishing the Wisconsin Elections Commission–a creation of the 2015 Republican Legislature–has become a campaign slogan for GOP gubernatorial candidates.  And the anxieties over election fraud that flourished during the pandemic are escalating.

In addition to including the perspectives of beleaguered officials and self-proclaimed “election-integrity” advocates, the article shows how disabled voters are grappling with new barriers to voting.  For all participating in the process, their faith in the “Foreword” momentum of democracy is fading.
