Peter Wehner’s Indictment of the GOP

In The Atlantic, Peter Wehner recounts the case that the real problem is the moral depravity of the Republican Party as an essential institution in America’s two-party electoral democracy. Alas, he does not offer here a roadmap to some sort of remedy. As we watch the January 6 committee hearings this week, let’s keep an eye out for ideas on how to repair the damage that Trump and his GOP enablers, like Kevin McCarthy, have done. Wehner’s essay suggests that what’s needed is a revitalization of traditional political virtue, like honor. While that might be necessary, it might not be sufficient: as I’ve argued previously, we should consider the institutional structures that caused the Republican Party as a whole to behave as it has and, therefore, potentially the institutional reform(s) required to enable the party and its leaders to recover the virtue that they’ve lost.
