“Supreme Court May Hear ‘800-Pound Gorilla’ of Election Law Cases”

Adam Liptak (@adamliptak), has this piece in The NY Times on this emergency application by North Carolina Republicans seeking a stay of the North Carolina Supreme Court’s decision in the partisan gerrymandering case of Harper v. Hall. The NC Supreme Court struck down the map drawn by the State Legislature on the ground that it was a partisan gerrymander in violation of the State Constitution. The emergency petition argues that the NC Supreme Court’s decision violates the independent state legislature doctrine. Liptak reports that the Supreme Court of the United States is due to consider the petition at their private conference next week.
