“Sen. Ted Cruz pumped more than $137,000 into former aide’s bid to unseat U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar”

Sen. Ted Cruz placed a big bet on a former top aide hoping to topple Rep. Henry Cuellar in South Texas, spending $137,000 out of his own campaign fund to pitch Cassy Garcia in the GOP primary.

That was more than Garcia herself raised, and an unusual – maybe unprecedented – instance of a candidate using campaign funds for so-called independent expenditures, which are not capped by law.
