What happens if a U.S. presidential candidate withdraws (or dies) before the election is over?

With the coronavirus and candidates both in their 70s, I have been getting many questions about what happens if, unfortunately, a presidential candidate dies or becomes incapacitated at various points between now and Inauguration Day.
