John McCain was an American hero who served his country with dignity and honor. While I often did not agree with his position on issues and many of his political views, he was a straight shooter and patriot who did what he thought was in the best interest of the country. He was an adult in the room when many others would not be, especially in the Trump era. In the field of election law, his work on the McCain-Feingold law was the last real bipartisan effort to deal with the problem of big money in politics. The Supreme Court is in the midst of dismantling his work in this area.

It is hard to see who has the courage in the Senate, and in the national Republican Party generally, to fill McCain’s shoes and stand up to President Trump’s attacks on the rule of law.

Condolences to his family. A great loss for the nation.
