I am very sad to report that Joaquin Avila, one of the country’s leading voting rights attorneys and activists, has died.  Avila, a MacArthur genius award winner, was known as the father of the California Voting Rights Act.

In coming days, I hope to post some remembrances from those in the election law community who worked with him.

May his family and friends find comfort in one another at this difficult time.
