“New Rule Leads to Old School Politics in South Carolina, Critics Say”

NYT: “What began as a gap between the digital revolution and the way South Carolina’s candidates had long filed for office has blown up into a legal battle that many say reflects a state whose politics have been raucous since the day it fired the shots that started the Civil War. At stake is whether a Republican, Paul Thurmond, son of Strom Thurmond, a United States senator for 48 years until his death in 2003, will be able to run for a state legislative seat in November. On Tuesday, a panel of three federal judges in Charleston will hear an appeal by South Carolina Democrats who say earlier rulings keeping Mr. Thurmond on the ballot were flawed.”
