NPV effort in Michigan won’t affect 2024 election

I’ve just been alerted to this: National Popular Vote compact won’t make Michigan 2022 ballot. Organizers may try again in 2024, according to the report, but pulling the plug on the effort to get on the ballot in 2022 presumably means Michigan won’t be adding its electoral votes to the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact in time to affect the 2024 election.

This news obviously updates the analysis in yesterday’s blog about possible Electoral College maneuvers before 2024. But developments concerning the NPV compact don’t directly affect the other part of that blog post’s analysis, which concerns the possibility (theoretically, at least) that one or more battleground states might attempt to move to the Maine/Nebraska method of appointing presidential electors (depending upon the outcome of the 2022 midterms). Consequently, the Electoral College math discussed in a follow-up post is not affected by this latest NPV-related news from Michigan.
