“GOP Fighting for Tougher Voter Identification Laws, ‘Voter Fraud Is Real'”

The quotation marks this time are straight from the headline.

RNLA chair David Norcross is quoted in the piece as saying that the “Colorado Secretary of State found last year that 5,000 non-citizens voted in their Senate race.” I’ve seen this assertion quite a bit — but actually, Secretary Gessler said no such thing.

Here are his report and accompanying testimony. What he says is that he compared voter registration lists to the motor vehicle rolls, and found 4947 people who showed a non-citizen’s credential to get their driver’s license — up to five years ago — and who also voted last year. He then explains that he has no idea how many of the individuals in question became citizens before voting.

Could be none, could be some, could be all. But what good is a headline that says “As few as zero non-citizens vote in Senate race”?
