“Is there truthiness to his ’08 bid?”

The Los Angeles Times offers this report on the Stephen Colbert candidacy. Colbert announced on his show that he was filing in South Carolina as a Democrat, not a Republican because he wanted to keep under the $5,000 in total spending to avoid election “law” requirements. Here is a link to an earlier show where Massie Ritsch of the Center for Responsive Politics discusses federal campaign finance law with Colbert.
Colbert has also set up this barebones website for collecting petition signatures for his site. In checking who owns the domain name, it appears that whoever is paying for this is using a service that promises not to disclose the identity of the owner of the domain absent a court order.
I’ll have more to say about Colbert soon.
UPDATE: The Politico reports that South Carolina Democrats will not put Colbert’s name on the ballot.
