- Allegations of voter fraud have suddenly entered the ongoing story over the firing of several U.S. Attorneys — at the very highest level of the federal government.
According to both the Washington Post and the New York Times today, President Bush spoke to AG Gonzales to pass along concerns of Republican officials that some prosecutors were not aggressively addressing voter fraud. That conversation, which the DOJ says Gonzales does not recall, preceded the recent dismissals.
The Administration’s position on why these dismissals occurred has not been consistent, and this purpose is new to the story, as far as I can recall. But at least for now, it is fascinating to see the status of voter fraud elevated even further.

And here’s the political blog Talking Points Memo, where the most recent posts by Josh Marshall include some strong criticism of the voter-fraud theory.
