Big News: PA Won’t Appeal Ruling Striking Down Voter ID

AP has the news.

As I’ve said, one cannot consider the constitutionality or permissibility of “voter id” in a vacuum.  Each state’s law must be evaluated separately in terms of the types of i.d.’s required, the means by which i.d’s are acquired and the burdens on voters. In the PA case, there was really insurmountable evidence that PA’s DOT was not capable as a bureaucracy of processing the requests for “free” identifications in a reasonable manner.

Gov. Corbett says that he’s going to go back to the Pa. legislature to see if they can write a new voter id law which will not lead to the disenfranchisement of so many people.

But chalk this up in the meantime as yet another victory for opponents of strict photographic identification requirements.
